CLOCK TOWER

The CLOCK TOWER is the only significant monument left in Piazza Fontana (Fountain Square) after the demolitions at the end of the last century. At that time the Tower of Raimondello Orsini, the Citadel and the Fountain were destroyed.

The Clock Tower was most probably built, at the half of the XVIII century, upon an existing construction of the middle age. Later on a frontal polygonal structure (1799) and a bell-tower (beginning of 1800) were added. The smaller bell was made in 1756, and the bigger one in 1818. The façade is characterised by typical ornamental motifs of the Eighteenth-century, such as octagonal panels and shells. The clock works perfectly and every day it needs to be wound up. It was made at the end of last century by the craftsmen of the "E.O. Caccialupi" Company (Naples).

The tolling of the bells and the time flying as fast as the movement of the clock-pointer are still the reference point for people living in this section of the historical center. The Clock Tower was saved from destruction by the intervention of the Municipality. A careful restoration was financed when the tower was closed to collapse
