| THE "ROSE OF THE WIND" FOUNTAIN |

|
This picture was taken on March 20, 1994. The Fountain of the Rose of the Winds was rededicated before thousands of the city's citizens. The latin inscription on the fountain proudly reads: "We will navigate courageously even against the strongest winds". Those words seem to forecast the hard times it went through. Sculpted in the 1950s by the architect Brunetti, it unfortunately had been abandoned for the last ten years. |

The restoration work brought back its original white color, reactived the 21 individual spouts within the fountain, and returned the surrounding landascape to its original beauty. The Rose of the winds now serves as a pleasant meeting place. It is named for and contains the head figures of Boreas, Northeast, Levanter, Sirocco, Austral, Southwest, West and Mistral, the winds that blow on Taranto and breathe life into the city's love of the sea. |
