TYPICAL PRODUCTS

The lonian sea provides Taranto with a myriad of gustatorial delights such as red mullet and dory, anchovy, shrimp and squid. The real favorites, however, are clams and musels.

Local restaurant offer a sumptuos yet light cuisine of all these seafoods accompained by a superb extravirgin olive oil produced locally. Typical plates include "cavatelli" (home made pasta) with mussels, risotto with mixed seafoods, grilled octopus and orecchiette pasta (literaly, little ears) with turnip-tops.

When these delicacies are served with the region's flavorful tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, artichokes and beans, the result is a most original cuisine of highest quality.

Besides the main dishes, the Tarantine region is also known foe esquisite mozzarella cheese, succulent and aromatic oranges and mandarines, sweet grapes and large watermelons.
