The Easter season in Taranto is an unforgettable experience. Holy Week is filled with ancient Catholic rites and rituals, unaltered from three centuries ago, that are felt profoundly by the local community. The principal event commence on Palm Sunday with the consigning of the carrying of the statues of the Grieving Virgin Mary and the Dead Christ.

The high point occurs during the processions of Holy Thursday (the Grieving) and Good Friday (The Misteries), during which the chosen Confraternity members parade slowly in traditional robes, barefoot and carrying the heavy statues. Solemn music accompanies the procession, which finish at sunrise and remind us of the Spanish domination of earlier centuries in southern Italy.
