POSTE ITALIANE PALACE

The Palace of the POSTE ITALIANE (the Italian Mail Service) belongs to the period of Mussolini. Its dimensions and the construction materials reflect the "classic" fascist style. The land was bought by the king Vittorio Emanuele IIIrd in 1935 "XIIIth year of the Fascist Era" (this is the way the contract was written and registered at the Communications State Department). The project was made by Cesare Bazzani, an engineer and architect from Rome.

The Palace of the Italian Mail Service was inaugurated in 1937. It recalls the typical architecture used to show the power of the régime, with a wide use of marbles for the façade as well as for the internal halls. The Palace is very large and it was deliberately realized to have a strong monumentality and also be seen from the sea. The edifice is almost 23 meters tall (with only 4 floors) and the tower facing the sea-front adds to it 17 more meters.

The four façades of the building are covered by limestone from Trani up to the first floor, and the rest by special whitewash and artificial stone. The edifice has been recently restored by the Italian Mail Service and brought back to its original beauty
