| AMATI PALACE |
|
The windows of PALAZZO AMATI look upon the Big Sea (Mar Grande) but the elegant main portal (XVIII c.) is on the back side. It is a sumptuous edifice realised (like most of the buildings of the aristocracy at that time) putting together existing buildings. With its 37 rooms it was surely adequate to the needs of Giacomo Amati (nine children in 1754) and his many servants. At the same time the Palace had to show the high social level of the family. They lost their Palace in1869, when it was expropriated and partially demolished. The Municipality, in fact, had decided to pull down the town walls and settle the street called Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. In the passage from private to public use, the distribution of the rooms totally changed. The façade on the sea side of Amati Palace was also modified upon the typical architectural taste of the end of the century. Since 1899 Amati Palace has been used as school building. Palace and D'Ayala Valva Palace. |
